GHHL is proud to be associated with the erection of the tallest flagpole in the world, at Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. The achievement was possible by using the Terex Demag CC 2800 lattice boom crawler crane and Liebherr LR 1750 lattice boom crawler crane. The Pole with the Height of 170 meters, Weighing approximately 500 Tonne, equipped with an automatic hoisting system, advanced cameras, wind speed measuring system and a lighting system for important occasion. The pole is tapered starting at the base with a diameter of 4.1 meter ending in the top with a diameter of 2 meter. The flag weighs 515 kg and is 60 meters in length and 30 meters wide. three Tuned Mass Damper systems are installed in the pole with a total weight of 11.000kg. The first two dampers are installed in the top section of the pole and the third damper is installed at a height of 125 meters. Together the 3 tuned mass dampers provide sufficient damping to prevent large oscillations of the pole caused by vortex shedding in its first second and third natural frequencies. There were several challenges that the flagpole was facing which include being situated in a seismic zone, high winds, and heavy load. During the erection of the flagpole there existed a possibility that the pole would vibrate (due to the vortex shedding) before the sections with the TMD could be installed. A mobile TMD was designed and installed in section 5 of the flagpole to add damping to the flagpole during the erection of the pole. After section 6 was installed on section 5 the mobile TMD was lifted from section 5 and reinstalled in section 6. This procedure was repeated all to way to the top section after which the mobile TMD was lifted out the flagpole. In addition to the lifting, GHHL provided a range of services including engineering works, such as FEED studies and method statements, project management, and assisting the overall project. We would like to thank and congratulate Al-Babtain Power & Telecommunication Co, Ministry of Interior, Ministry of Defence and Government of Saudi Arabia, for their support, without which, the achievement would not have been possible. 08/13/2014
